1889 Rugby Engraving, A Football Match

1889 Rugby Engraving, A Football Match: Mounted, glazed and in apparently original outer frame, a fine large engraving after the original painting by artist William H. Overend (1851-1898) and engraver Lionel Smythe (1839-1918). One of the game’s most famous images, this is a rare photogravure of the 1886 Calcutta Cup scoreless Rugby draw between Scotland and England at Edinburgh’s Raeburn Place on 13th March. It was printed in Paris and published on 25th March 1889 by the Fine Art Society Limited, 148 New Bond Street, London. The image in the lot has some foxing and darkening in a few areas. The original was exhibited in Paris and is credited with having inspired the founding of some French rugby clubs. A mural reproduction of the original hangs in the Library of the Scottish Rugby Union at Murrayfield; another similar is displayed at the New Zealand Rugby Museum at Palmerston North. Image dimensions: H 23” x W 32.5”; Framed Dimensions: H 34” x W 42”. Provenance: This print has been privately owned by a collector since October 1987, when it was purchased from the Burlington Gallery, Mayfair, London.
