Cardiff ‘Then and Then’ match worn Rugby Jerseys: Two rugby jerseys in the famous blue and black hoops of Cardiff RFC, one from the 1930s worn by Edward Verdun ‘Eddie’ Watkins and the other from 1980’s worn by Steve ‘Zulu’ Evans. Player Profile No.1 - Eddie Watkins (b.1916) began his rugby at Bedwas before moving to Cardiff RFC. He played 151 games for Cardiff between 1934/35 and 1938/39, scoring 10 tries. The lock gained eight caps for Wales, making his victorious and historic debut in 1935 against the NZ All Blacks. Eddie "went North" in 1939, joining the Wigan rugby league side from where he won three caps with the Welsh Rugby League team. He played for the Police at all levels, and for the RAF and other combined Forces sides when both League and Union stars were allowed to during WW2. He was a policeman stationed in Porth, before becoming a schoolteacher. He passed away in Caerphilly in 1995, aged 79. Player Profile No.2 - Steve ‘Zulu’ Evans, so called because he was born in Zambia to Welsh parents, played for Rhymney Youth, Bargoed and Pontypool before joining Cardiff RFC in 1980. Between then and 1985 the speedy wing played 80 times, scoring 34 tries. The other jersey, numbered 14, is a 42” Bukta Super Scrum and Cardiff’s ‘regular’ after the Centenary in 1976, with that fact noted on the elaborate & colourful badge. Excellent. (2)
