Rare Portraits of Cabul prisoners Book - Extremely scarce volume titled ‘Portraits of the Cabul [Kabul] Prisoners’ Drawings by Vincent Eyre, 1843 - contemporary half calf binding. Collection of full page lithographic portraits, all 32 are present. A handwritten manuscript lists the name of the portraits present. Portraits include, McNaughten, Alexander Burnes, Mohamed Akber Khan, Lady Sale, Pottingers, Mrs Eyre, Charles Griffiths, Capt. Skinners, capt Lawrence, capt Anderson, Captains Johnson, Boyd, Bygrave, Troup, Airey, Conolly and Waller, Lieut Haughton, Melville, prison scene, Alexander’s column near Cabul, the fort at which General Elphinstone died, prison at Shewukke, and a panoramic folding litho of Caves at Bameean. The compilation of illustrations was compiled to accompany the Journal of Lieut Eyre. The drawings were made in captivity and sent home for the amusement of Mr Eyres private friends, and it was not known that they would meet the public eye. The addition to the set of drawings presented here in litho form were made by his friends and relatives including G.T.Vigne. There is a page in the front ‘Suggested arrangement of the subject for binding with Lieut Eyres Narrative; or Lady Sales Journal’ giving suggested page number for each lithograph. Scarce
