Description

An historically unique aluminium mallet head putter (stamped Jack Ross-Newport. 1) showing an engraved signature of John Ball and the date 17/6/12 to the sole and the engraved signature of Abe Mitchell and the date 17th/6/12 to the Crown Note: 7/6/1912 was the day that John Ball beat Abe Mitchell to win his last Amateur Championship at Royal North Devon (Westward Ho!) At the 38th Hole after Mitchell missed a 4ft to win the title at the 36th hole. The event was marred by vocal abuse from workers at Bideford shipyard to the playing gentry and the embarrassment seemed to have put a Mitchell “off his stroke” in the final as he himself was born illegitimate and came from a working-class background. It is more than certain that this was the putter John Ball used to win the tournament in 1912 and was inscribed by both players and possibly given to Abe Mitchell following the unpleasant crowd behaviour. John Ball is regarded as Britain’s finest to golfer -was the 1st Amateur to win the Open Championship, won a total of 8x Amateur Championships and a whole host of other events. He was inducted into the World Golf’s Hall of Fame in 1977. Abe Mitchell turned professional in 1913, had a distinguished playing career, became a personal golf instructor to Samuel Ryder and his figure adorned the top of the Ryder Cup Trophy
