Historic Newspapers- London Gazette – Titus Oates and the ‘Popish Plot’ two issues of the London Gazette covering the period May 7th – May 18th 1685, the first announcing that Titus Oates had been found guilty of perjury in organising the ‘Popish Plot’ and the second with a contemporaneous report on the sentence meted out on Titus Oates for organising the ‘Popish Plot’. According to the report he was to be displayed with a paper bag on his head announcing that he had been convicted of perjury, and then whipped through the Streets of London by the common hangman, then placed in the pillory, then fined 10 marks for each and every perjury, and then committed to prison for life. Fair justice for a man who was responsible for the deaths of so many innocent people accused by him of treason. See also lot 109.
