Brunel – The Thames Tunnel rare French tourists’ guide to the Thames Tunnel, 1837. Card wrappers featuring a depiction of the tunnel under the Thames, browned consistent with age, French text, approx eight litho plates (three folding), two folding litho plans. The plates and plans are identical to the English version which was produced for tourists as both a souvenir and also in order to raise funds for the completion of the project. It is possible therefore that this was produced specifically for use by French tourists and visitors. As such this is a particularly rare example. Approx 14x11 cm. The ambitious Thames Tunnel was proposed by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel, but received considerable setbacks in its construction, not least by the fact that it was breached and flooded. It was eventually completed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and is still in used today as part of the London Underground.
