Rare and early 1880 Devonshire Park silver plated tennis championship trophy made by Mappin and Webb Sheffield London engraved to the front and inscribed “Devonshire Park-Lawn Tennis Tournament 1880 won by D Womersley” – overall 10.25 inches H (26.5 cm). Note The Devonshire Park opened its gates to the public on July 1, 1874 and in the following year 1875, for the first time, a tennis court was marked out on its prestigious lawns. A little later in 1877 the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club set about regularising the laws of lawn tennis and produced its first tournament at Wimbledon that year. The Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club is still in existence and hosts the annual ATP and WTA Tour tournament called the AEGON Eastbourne International in the run up to Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships each year.
