HARDY CARVED SALMON: Fine early Hardy half block carved wood salmon on bevel edge oak board, left facing fish, hand painted, Hardy ivorine label to left base and front brass plaque engraved "Salmon caught on River Wye, Sept 25th 1915, weight 34lbs, girth 22.5", length 51", by Capt. Count Robert Metaxa", some fading to fish, two cracks on tail fin, board (split) measures 54"x16". Note: Captain Count Frederick Robert Wyndham Metaxa, 1879-1939, son of Admiral Count Metaxa, 2nd Lieutenant Royal Scots Fusiliers 1900 part of the 6th Fusilier Brigade, command of Major General Barton, in the battle for Pieter's Hill during the Relief of Ladysmith. Casualties were considerable and Metaxa was severely wounded. 1st December 1910 Lieutenant Metaxa, on retired pay and a member of the Reserve of Officers, was granted by Royal Warrant the rank of Captain and employed as a Captain of Invalids at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, died January 18th, 1918, aged 39.
