Rountree, Harry (b.1878 - d.1950) "THE FOX AND THE BEAR" Ryder Cup 1929 related - watercolour on paper signed - image 27 ½"x 20" overall 31.75 x 24" - the figures representing the captain of both teams with George Duncan (GB&I) depicted as the wily old fox and, Walter Hagen (USA) as the bear. Prov: Harry Rountree was a great friend and admirer of George Duncan, the English professional golfer who captained the Ryder Cup match at Moortown in Leeds on 26th and 27th May 1929, the American captain being Walter Hagen. This historically important painting was presented to George Duncan by Harry Rountree shortly after the match as a mark of respect for his captaincy. Sold with evidence of provenance and three pages from a golf magazine depicting Duncan and Hagan. Note: Harry Rountree was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He came to England in 1901 and contributed to Punch and The Sketch. He illustrated books, and perhaps most famously his 63 illustrations for Bernard Darwin's book "Golf Courses of the British Isles" 1910.
