Charles II – The Popish Plot – the trial of Lord Chief Justice Scroggs The Resolutions of the House of Commons for the impeachment of Sir William Scroggs...Thursday 23th December 1680. Printed parliamentary paper, folio 15pp unbound, good condition. Scroggs had been put in charge of the trials of those accused by Titus Oates and his fellow conspirators and at first enthusiastically and brutally administered justice on the Papists they accused. Later, however, he began to doubt their evidence and this led to them arraigning him before the Privy Council for discrediting their evidence. He was acquitted, but later was impeached – from which he only escaped by the dissolution of Parliament in 1681, and his subsequent death two years later.
