Slavery – Chinese Slavery in Cuba – a British slave owner rare document dated 1867 being a slave contract for a Chinese worker in Cuba, signed by the slave and by his owner who signs ‘M W Black’. This is believed to be a British slave owner, as the British were active in processing Chinese slave workers to Cuba at this time. The heading above Black’s signature states ‘patron’ (boss) and below the signature, written by hand is the term ‘administrador’. A rare document indicating a foreign, and no doubt British, slave owner outside the Spanish domain, and some 30 years since slavery was supposedly banned throughout the British empire.
