Privateer Official Admiralty Document 1758 during the 7 years’ War against France manuscript annotations that ‘William Higson belonging to the DEFIANCE Private Ship of War do Constitute my Friend Samuel Tapscott of Chiffords Inn London My true and Lawfull Attorney all Prize Money’ etc. With 1/6d revenue stamp top left. Signed by William Higson, Samuel Tapscott & Charles Asgill Dyer (Captain of the ship.) size 20 x 32cm. Report in Newspaper articles of 1758, generally good, some minor tears. Note: Yesterday fell down to Gravesend, in order to proceed on a Cruise, the Defiance Privateer, Capt. Alexander Dickie, reckoned the compleatest Privateer of her size that has sailed from the River, this War. The Derby Mercury. June 15th 1758. The Johannah, Goodfellow, from Bergen, is retaken by the Defiance Privateer, and sent into Hull. July 1758. Yesterday Morning an Express arrived from Falmouth, with Advice, that the Defiance Privateer, lately commanded by Capt. Dyer, but now by his First Lieutenant, had taken & brought in there, after an obstinate Engagement, a French Privateer, called the Provost of Paris, of 14 Nine Pounders, & 325 Men. The Defiance had 22 Six Pounders, & 200 Men. The Engagement lasted 6 Hours, wherein the Defiance had 11 Men killed, & 21 wounded. The Frenchman had 70 Men killed & wounded. This is the second Prize taken by the Defiance this War. 1758
