Description

India – Rare Sikh War 1846 Poster of Moodkee, Ferozeshah and Sobraon – Major General Sir W. Gilbert, Bodmin, Cornwall. 1846 poster addressed from the inhabitants of Bodmin Cornwall, offering congratulations to Major General Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert (a prominent Bodmin inhabitant) for his part in victories at the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah and Sobraon (in the Sikh wars). A very rare ephemeral survival commemorating the Sikh War. Measures 14" by 9" Horizontal folds and general age/edge wear. During the First Anglo-Sikh War Major General Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert commanded a division of Sir Hugh Gough's army at the battles of Mudki and Ferozeshahr (December 1845), and at Sobraon (10 February 1846) Gough mentioned him favourably in his dispatches. He was made a KCB in April 1846 and again commanded a division under Gough in the Second Anglo-Sikh War, at the 1849 battles of Chilianwala and Gujrat before leading his division (which included Robert Napier) across the Jhelum River to pursue the remnants of the Sikh army and receiving their surrender on 3 and 6 March. The Anglo Sikh Wars were hard fought, the British acknowledged the Khalsa army were formidible opponents and the best Asiatic army they had faced, they had narrowly defeated the Khalsa army and annexed the Punjab. Dated April 11th 1846 - Printed by Liddell and Sons Bodmin (United Kingdom)
