Scotland – 1630 – Charles I Royal Charter issued in the name of Charles I and his…

Scotland – 1630 – Charles I Royal Charter issued in the name of Charles I and his Scottish Commissioners, written in Latin on one large page of vellum, a total of 79 lines, attested by several members of the Scottish nobility, dated at the Royal Manor of Theobalds (Hertfordshire) July 15th 1630. Fine condition with attractive calligraphic introduction, lacking seal. The Charter grants the manors and lands of Edmonstron & Caldcoats to James Raith, advocate of Edinburgh. An interesting aspect of this document is the nature of the witnesses to the document who were attending Theobalds in England at this time. It would seem that in 1630 when this document was drawn up Charles I was in residence at Theobalds and that a conference with the Commissioners and other members of the Scottish nobility was taking place. This was possibly in connection with the King’s Progress through Scotland which was made in 1633 when the Royal Treasure was lost in the Firth of Forth.
