Extremely rare 1897 Royal Engineers Sword issued to Lieutenant G H Sim who played in the 1875 FA Cup Final the sword is typical of an 1897 style and pattern which feature a plated steel hilt with a pierced inset royal cypher (VR) of Queen Victoria. The blade has extensive and excellent quality decoration including G H Sim, the Royal Engineers lightning bolts, cannon, royal crown and cypher and scrolling foliage. The grip is made from fishskin bound in silver twistwire. It’s complete with the field service scabbard and the blade measures 32” and an overall size of 39”. The sword is in good condition. Note: We are currently in the 140th Year of the FA Cup final which involved the Royal Engineers FC winning the trophy. This was the fourth FA cup final ever played and was between the Royal Engineers and Old Etonians. The first match on 13/03/1875 and finished a 1-1 draw, with the Royal Engineers winning 2-0 in the match replay at Kennington Oval on 16th March 1875. Lt HW Renny-Tailyour scoring all 3 goals for the Royal Engineers. The winning team included Capt W Merriman, Lt GH Sim, Lt GC Onslow, Lt RM Ruck, Lt PG von Donop, Lt CK Wood, Lt HE Rawson, Lt RH Stafford, Lt HW Renny-Tailyour, Lt A Mein and Lt C Wingfield-Stratford
