Historic Newspapers – Strand Magazine – Paranormal – Literature – Arthur Conan Doyle – the Cottingley Fairies edition of the Strand Magazine for Christmas 1920 in which is published for the first time Conan Doyle’s sensational assertion that two young girls in the village of Cottingley, Yorks, not only encountered fairies but also photographed them. The story took the post WWI world by storm and remained an intriguing mystery for most of the 20th c with the photographs defying even sophisticated scientific analysis – and was only finally unmasked as a well intentioned hoax by the girls when one of them, as an elderly lady finally confessed on a television programme. The edition also carried original stories by P G Wodehouse and ‘Sapper’ amongst others.
