Rare William Philpot patent scare head putter c1903 – with a wide parallel head stamped Philpot Princes Club Mitcham and Patent with No ending 3 – with full ebonised sole plate fitted with 6x screws and sole stamped “Centric Weight 42” c/w Philpot Mitcham shaft stamp just below the full length thick period leather grip with underlisting. Note William Philpot Mitcham/Ostend Belgium - William Philpot grew up in English golfing outpost of Westward Ho! and learned something of club repair from the club’s professional at the time John Allan. Allan apparently offered him a job but instead left for South Africa. He returned to England sometime in the early 1890s and spends at least a year as professional to the Royal Artillery Club at Woolwich Arsenal. He then spent 1899 to 1901 as professional and club maker at Trentham before becoming Philip Wynne’s assistant at Princes Club Mitcham it seems that Philpot was primarily club maker to the Princes Club as he never became a professional but we have seen several clubs marked “Philpot Mitcham” such as the above. In 1910 he crossed the Channel to take up the post of professional at Lombardzyte GC near Ostend in Belgium
