Photographs – the Oppenheim/Rauschenberg archaeological expedition 1912 three complete photo albums taken by a member of the expedition which went to Tell Halaf in Mesopotamia during 1912-13. The albums contain approx 72 photographs showing members of the party travel across the desert local people and work during the dig and some of the finds. A particularly important shot shows the visit of Lawrence of Arabia who was himself involved in an archaeological dig in the area. Lawrence is seen at the dig site with a member of the expedition and local workman looking pensively and backed by a large sculpture doubtless discovered during the expedition. Lawrence was particularly camera shy throughout his entire life making original photographs of him scarce. Images of him at this period when he was a very active archaeologist in the Middle East are particularly so. Together with a copy of Oppenheim’s book on the dig (in German).
