Art and Artists Ian Fenwick three original cartoons by Fenwick two with autograph notes signed by Fenwick dated January 1944 shortly before he was heroically killed. Each executed in line drawing with wash colour. Ian Fenwick was both a fine cartoonist a member of the original SAS and a war hero. A Major in the 1st Battalion SAS he was killed in action in June 1944 during Operation Gain the clandestine sabotage mission south of Paris aimed at blowing up railway lines. He was killed in an attempt to rescue his men who he thought had been captured by the Germans. He attempted to take on a German column single handed but was killed instantly when his Jeep was ambushed. In civilian life he was a noted cartoonist working for Punch and other magazines. Original artwork by Fenwick is rare and highly sought after. A fine collection of 50 original cartoons by Fenwick are to be seen in the Royal Green Jacket Museum in Winchester.
