Northumberland – John Tarleton the notorious slave trader extensive archive of documents relating to Tarleton and his wife Isabella including a large qty of correspondence legal documents printed sales particulars etc mostly dealing with Tarleton’s estates in Northumberland and elsewhere in the North of England. Tarleton (1755-1841) was a prominent and notorious slave trader who made a fortune from the African trade. His firm Tarleton and Backhouse based in Liverpool backed 40 slaving enterprises between 1786 and 1804 and Tarleton himself was prominent in lobbying the likes of William Pitt to have restrictions on the slave trade removed. In later life he invested in property – as reflected in this extensive archive.
