Vintage Fishing Tackle Auction 20th March 2010

With eight hundred and fifty lots to sell there was as usual something for everyone.
The general buzz both on Friday viewing and Saturday sale day was suggesting a strong market. Notably Hardy reels were continuing in strength with early and late models all selling at premium.

The 1912 Hardy salmon Perfect lot 50 sold at twice estimate at £1400, lot 100 all brass 4" Hardy Perfect sold over estimate at £2200, and lot 299 Hardy 1894 Combined Fly and Spinning reel sold for £1250 against an upper estimate of £900.
All through the Hardy range reels were strong, perhaps only to be beaten on price increase by the rare gadgets on offer.

Lot 380 Hardy Combined priest and scales sold well over estimate for £2800 whilst lot 383 the Hardy Combined gaff and scales sold well at £2200. The rare Hardy Atomiser lot 382 sold for £1200 with much interest from the UK and Europe.

A new theme was to introduce collectable lead weights, yes I know it's a bit strange to get your head around but the USA collectors have been chasing them for years.
A small collection of rare leads went under the hammer with lot 392 a Hardy Keel lead selling at £75 and an Allcock's sea lead the following lot selling for the same price with many bidders proving this to be a UK first for any saleroom.

Lures and early baits have bounced back with great interest in the items we offered for sale. Lot 65, three unusual hand painted baits triples estimate and sold for £200, Lot 111 the early Allcock's Clipper also tripled estimate selling for £480 with the Gregory bait lot 117 being fiercely chased to double estimate at £1500. It is clear the market is returning, so dig out your lures for the July sale.

Rods in general remain strong with clean examples doing well. We had 317 individual rods in this sale and only 10 remain knocked forward to the July sale proving we have it right in the rod market. Notable prices were carp rods and of course short clean fly rods from Hardy Pezon and Farlow heading the chase.

Cased fish showed some signs of recovery with a stunning Wye Chub, lot 300 selling at £460, a fine Carved salmon on board lot 319 sells at £2400, Malloch cast salmon lot sold for £2200 and the Bonnar Pike lot 314 sold well at nearly twice estimate £1800. Quality and rarity are still the guides for good fish prices but the market is moving.

In all a strong successful auction, well attended, record commission bids and a very lively Internet bidding section making it a very busy day for the auctioneers and staff.
The well established Tackle Fair we hold on Friday and Saturday at the sale venue remains well supported and sold out, so book your tables early to avoid disappointment.

Next vintage fishing tackle sale is on Sunday 13th July, with viewing Saturday 12th and morning of the sale. We are accepting entries now for this sale. Please call John Stephenson on 07816 674044 or email js@mullocksauctions.co.uk with any tackle items you may wish to enter.
