Auction News WORLD RECORD PRICE FOR THE ROYDE PATENT REEL Our recent Vintage fishing tackle auction November 18th 2007 was another packed event. Changing the auction day and event to the weekend with Saturday viewing and Sunday Auction was universally poplar with buyers and the traders alike who were happy with the increased attendance at the sale both days. Prices were very buoyant and the sale reached 94% sold success rate, a remarkable achievement and one most other competitors can only dream of. The first 100 lots of books sold well, the star item being Lot 98 a rare pre-production copy of Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing, sold to a UK collector for £430. A series of letters from Richard Walker sold from £50 up to £250 per letter and a rare photograph album containing black and white photographs, each hand written to rear by R. Walker, soared over estimate to £500. The star item in the Reels section based on rarity value was Lot 300 the Royde Reel, against a catalogue estimate of £800-1200 it was finally sold at a hammer price of £2,700. The reel stays with a UK collector despite competition from Germany, Holland and other UK buyers. Middle market tackle prices are strong, again Hardy 1950/60s tackle still rampant with good reels including Salmon Marquis models selling up to twice estimate. A selection of modern high tech fly equipment by Sage, Orvis and Hardy all sold well over estimate proving a strong buying link between collectors and anglers, many of course who are involved in both pursuits. As expected early model Hardy reels are strong if the condition is fine to mint. Lot 153 Hardy all brass Perfect selling for £2,500. Other named brass reels much as before and cased fish selling about mid estimate with buyers now looking for finest examples to upgrade or unusual fish species. Allcock's Aerial reels are buoyant if condition is fine, unusual variants continue to sell well. Rods continue to grow in popularity and price, fine condition examples of almost any maker will sell, short, late, split cane fly models are again popular with buyers from Japan, USA and Europe. Flies, wallets and accessories are strong typified with Lot 299Q, three Hardy Aero flies sold over estimate at £190, proving smaller can be bigger in price terms. Hardy Angler’s knives are always popular, a rare No1 drop knife sold over estimate for £1050. All other prices can be found on our PRICES REALISED report accessed from our website home page.
