300 in the November 18th Sale, is an extremely important threadline
tournament reel.REEL: THE ROYDE PATENT TOURNAMENT THREADLINE CASTING REEL, probably the most rare of all threadline reels for the collector, Patent No 22.597 October 14th 1907 by Michael Holroyd-Smith. Launched at the London Stadium Casting Competition in 1908, the Fishing Gazette, August 8th notes: “We have pleasure in giving the accompanying illustrations of the Royde reel that attracted so much attention during the Angling Tournament at the Stadium” and further “it can be used for the lightest bait casting, as evident by Mr Holroyd-Smith winning event No16 making the furthest and cleanest cast of the 3/16 oz bait during the tournament”. Few if any other examples of these reel have been seen, the vendor explained, the original owner of the reel bought it at the Stadium in 1908 and has had it in the family since, using it infrequently until recent times. The reel was made in direct competition to the Illingworth No1 yet seems not to have been successful. Alloy cylinder body, rear central pinion crank wind with black ebonised handle knob, fretted brass reciprocating spool flier cage with ceramic line guide, front tension clutch adjuster. The reel carries many features and styling similar to the Spinet, Illingworth and Chippendale reels of the same period. This fine example is complete, showing little if any wear and retains all the original finish.
